Light & Wonder started supplying operators in Alberta on the day the province opened its regulated online gaming market.

Alberta is the second Canadian province to introduce a commercial iGaming framework, following Ontario, whose regime launched in 2022 through iGaming Ontario. Canada has no federal regulation of online gambling, leaving each province to set its own approach.

What went live

According to the company, the following elements were in place from the first day of the market:

  • Its content marketplace
  • Integrations with operators
  • Platform capability
  • Exclusive arrangements across some game families

Light & Wonder did not disclose which operators it is supplying, how many titles were launched or any Alberta licence or registration number.

What the company said

Byron Bridger, vice president for commercial and enterprise platforms at Light & Wonder iGaming, described Alberta as “one of the most important new iGaming markets in North America, and we are entering from a position of real strength”.

About Light & Wonder

Light & Wonder is headquartered in the United States and supplies slot content, table game technology and iGaming content to land-based and online casino operators. Its online business already operates in Ontario and the United Kingdom, and it holds approvals from European regulators including the Malta Gaming Authority, Sweden’s Spelinspektionen, Denmark’s Spillemyndigheden, the Hellenic Gaming Commission and the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner.

Why it matters for operators

A provincial market opening tends to reward suppliers that are integrated and ready on day one, as operators build their initial lobbies from the content available at launch. Light & Wonder’s experience in Ontario gives it a reference point for a second Canadian provincial market, though the commercial details of its Alberta position have not been made public.
